New service lets you check who is sending spam messages in South Africa

The Association of Wireless Application Service Providers (WASPA) has launched its new codes project, which will allow South Africans to identify the owner of a short, long, or USSD code.

Among other features, the group said the service will allow users to identify unwanted messages advertising products, as well as determine the legitimacy of a sender.

Ilonka Badenhorst, chief executive of WASPA, said unsolicited direct marketing messages can create frustration for the recipient, especially if they are unable to identify the sender of the message.

Consumers can now visit the WASPA code platform and enter the number to get more information about the sender of the marketing message.

“This will make it easier to identify where the SMS is coming from, although of course the platform will only contain information about service providers registered with WASPA.

“If the sender is identified, consumers will have peace of mind knowing that they are communicating with a reputable actor bound by the WASPA code of conduct,” she explains.

“If the company that sent the SMS is registered with WASPA, their contact details will be provided, allowing the consumer to contact them directly for more information on the sender of the message, to request to be removed from the database or file a complaint. “

The Codes project is an extension of WASPA’s Do Not Contact (DNC) initiative, said Badenhorst, which is a list that consumers can add their number to, to avoid unsolicited SMS advertising.

Designed with consumer protection in mind, WASPA members engaged in direct SMS marketing campaigns are required to review the DNC list weekly.

She said that in a situation where the organization sending the messages does not comply, the consumer can then contact WASPA directly, as the organization has a well-established complaints process.

“It should be noted that the Consumer Protection Act and the Privacy Act contain specific provisions regulating direct marketing and the WASPA Code incorporates all the requirements of these laws.

“In addition, this Code is binding on WASPA members and any business sending messages through a WASPA member. “

“This means that consumers who use DNC and Codes facilities can rest assured that WASPA members – and their customers – can only send them marketing messages if they are already customers or have specific permission to do so.” , as well as being easily identifiable as the sender, ”she said.
